Program Description: Roughly 23,000 people are currently active as students, teachers, researchers, or employees of the University of Bremen. It has become one of Germany`s top eleven universities of excellence. It is the science center of Northern Germany, renowned for its strengths in the sciences and engineering disciplines, as well as the humanities and social sciences. This exchange is with the department of foreign language studies. Students must have completed a minimum of five semesters of German to qualify for this program.
Program Location: The Hanseatic City on the banks of the River Weser emanates a special charm. Bremen enjoys a reputation for being cosmopolitan and tolerant. In 2005, Bremen was the first town to be awarded the distinction “City of Science“. It was in connection with this that Bremen erected the House of Science, where visitors are now able to gain interesting insights into life and work at Bremen’s universities, colleges and research institutions. In 2004 the City Hall and the Roland statue on the market square, a symbol of justice and freedom, were declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The Bremen Glocke is one of the most beautiful concert halls in the North of Germany. The Schnoor is Bremen’s oldest district. Bremen hosts a number of festivals such as the “Breminale“, which is a five-day open-air festival held on the banks of the River Weser attracts upwards of 150,000 visitors every year.
Application Procedure: After meeting with a study abroad advisor, applicants must complete the UofM study abroad online application as well as the Bremen application materials for exchange students found on the U of M online application. The Bremen application will need to be turned in to the study abroad office.
German Language Courses: Students can earn up to 15 ECTS (7 US credit hours) in German language courses within their first semester abroad.
During the semester the University of Bremen offers German language courses free of charge to all exchange students from partner universities. These courses consist of a German language course every week for one semester during the lecture period for 6 ECTS (3 US credit hours).
Pre-semester German Language Course: Students have the opportunity to attend an intensive German language course offered prior to orientation week. The course is co-financed by the University of Bremen, allowing exchange students to pay a reduced fee of 152€ for 60 hours for 6 ECTS credits (3 US credit hours).
A course consisting of 2 credit hours in the self-learning center with support from tutors for 3 ECTS (1.5 US credit hours) is offered additionally. Students who stay one whole year can attend this self- learning course a second time within their second semester.
Courses: For the most part, the study programs at Bremen University are delivered in German. There are only a few study programs where English is the language of delivery. It is therefore extremely important that your German is at a high enough level to follow classes and studies in German at the beginning of the semester you enroll for. This exchange is with the department of foreign language studies. Students must have completed a minimum of five semesters of German language to qualify for this program.
Accommodation: Accommodation for exchange students can be arranged through the International Office Accommodation Service (residences/private accommodation). In most cases, students would live in a furnished room on campus. Students should expect to share a bathroom/kitchen with others. Germany Insurance Requirements: Students attending the University of Bremen have specific insurance requirements that must be met, and it is recommended to purchase a German insurance, which is currently around 80 Euros/month.
Each student is required to have international health insurance coverage including all medical, hospital and repatriation expenses without any exception while in Germany. Health insurance coverage is a prerequisite for enrolment at a university. Private health insurances of home countries or travel insurances for the purpose of visa applications are not accepted for enrolment at the University of Bremen if they limit the cost of treatments or duration of coverage.
Living Cost in Bremen: Living costs in Bremen are approximately 900 -1000 € per month. This calculation is based on:
· Housing approx. 350-450€ per month
· Food and groceries approx. 250€ per month
· Health Insurance about 100€ per month
· Books (depending on classes and degree) approx. 100€ per term
· Semester contribution of approx. 390€ (for public transportation etc.)per term
