Program Description:
Memphis Tiger
The UM International Summer camp provides a one-of-a-kind opportunity to learn about and explore the city's legacy in music, sports, hospitality and more. Students can choose from one of five modules for the summer session: Hospitality and Resort Management, Intensive English, Sports Management, Memphis Music and Healthcare Administration.

About the University:
The University of Memphis was founded in 1912 and is a fully accredited comprehensive university located in the southwest corner of the state of Tennessee. It is a major research institution that offers baccalaureate degrees in more than 70 different areas of study and master's degrees in 49 departments. Doctorates and specialized degrees are available in 14 disciplines. More than 20,000 students representing all 50 states and 69 foreign countries are enrolled here.

 

Location: The university is located in a residential area of Memphis, Tennessee, the 18th largest city in the US. The beautifully landscaped campus is located near shopping, dining, recreation and entertainment. Known for its musical heritage and cultural traditions, Memphis is a city rich in museums, parks, theaters, concert venues and both fine and casual dining. Memphis also offers a variety of sports, including NBA Basketball, USL Soccer, MiLB Baseball and College sports. Easy day trips from Memphis include travel to the cities of Nashville, St. Louis, Little Rock and Oxford.
 

Public Transportation: The city of Memphis has a limited amount of public transportation. To learn about the bus system, you can go to the MATA website.

AccommodationsStudents will be staying in a double occupancy dormitory. The dormitory provides them with laundry, wireless internet services, cable television and utilities.

OUR SUMMER MODULES
 
MEMPHIS MUSIC
 
Participants will explore Memphis’ rich musical legacy and its significance in US history and culture. Major landmarks and museums will serve as your classroom as you learn about the different forms of music that have shaped this city such as blues, jazz, soul, gospel, rock and rap music. Field trips for this course will include Graceland, the Stax Museum, the Rock and Soul Museum, and Sun Studio.
 
  INTENSIVE ENGLISH
 
Participants of this module will learn strategies for communicating in English. Students will practice informal conversations on personal topics and current events to gain fluency and confidence. This course is designed for participants who want to attend a US university or are interested in study abroad. The goal will be to help students thrive in academic study.
AMERICAN SPORTS
 
Participants will examine issues of global sport business, marketing and media, tourism, event management, popular culture and policy. The course includes formal lectures, experiential learning and site visits to companies involved in the management of global sports products. Memphis is an ideal location to examine American sports. It is home to several professional sport teams including the NBA Memphis Grizzlies, the MiLB Memphis Redbirds, the USL Memphis 901 FC, and the AAF Memphis Express.

 
  Hospitality and Resort Management

Faculty from the Kemmons Wilson School of Hospitality at the University of Memphis will deliver this module through lectures, practical training courses and visits to hotels, tourist and cultural attractions in Memphis and surrounding cities. The Holiday Inn Hotel on campus and will serve as the primary learning environment for participants. Lectures will cover a range of topics including culinary tourism, hotel operations, sustainable tourism, consumer behavior, commercial and recreational management.
