Program Description: Costa Rica with its tropical setting and sustainable practices in farming and plantation provides a unique opportunity for students to appreciate biology. Studying Biology in Costa Rica helps students make connections to the concept of biodiversity and our role in the ecosystem. Students will observe diverse plants and animals in their native environment by going on multiple excursions to various national parks, reserves, and refuges. Alongside the nature excursions, students will also interact with locals during their visits to farms and plantations.

Course Information:  BIOL 1020: Biology of Organisms will expose and improve students' understanding of biodiversity, its significance and sustainability through direct observation of plants, animals during nature excursions, visits to national parks, plantations and farms. Prior to the travel component students will receive preparatory material in areas of evolution, organ systems, biodiversity, ecology and sustainability through eCourseWare and two required group meetings. 

Accommodations: The program includes shared lodge style accommodations at the tranquil mountain campus of the Conversa Language School in Santa Anna (20 minutes from San Jose).

Excursions: Student will experience the Cahuita National Park, a Nocturnal Wildlife tour, the Caribbeans Cacao farm tour, a pineapple plantation visit, Arenal National Park, Medicinal Plants farm, Monteverde cloud forest, Orchid Gardens visit, Manzanillo and Gandoca Wilflife refuge, and more.

Faculty Leader: The program will be led by Dr. Alka Sharma (asharma7@memphis.edu) of the University of Memphis Department of Biology.
