Program Description: This program benefits students from Hospitality and Sport Management, Business and Economics, Health and related fields such as nursing, Exercise Sciences, Nursing, and Nutrition & Dietetics. This study abroad program is developed in collaboration between the Swiss School of Tourism and Hospitality (SSTH), the SIAF Campus of Volterra and the University of Memphis (UofM). This experienced-based program consists of formal lectures, team projects, guest speakers from European wellness related hospitality operations, and experiential learning at the facilities.

Program Location: Switzerland, historically, is known as a world leader in spa and wellness management. The program will begin at the Swiss School of Tourism and Hospitality (SSTH) located in Chur; a scenic setting in the Alps, where housing and meals are provided. In Switzerland, the students will visit a number of world-class hospitality operations related to wellness, where the students will be immersed in learning about spa business development, foodservice operations, and receiving
instructions on global hospitality operations, entrepreneurship, management and operations.

The second leg of the trip will be in Tuscany, Italy where the students will learn about restaurant and foodservice development and operations, understand the culture and renowned Tuscan cuisine, recognize the Italian entrepreneurial spirit and compare the distinctions in hospitality management styles between the U.S. and Europe. Sites the students will visit include; Zurich, Chur, Davos, Volterra, Bolgheri, Pisa and conclude in Florence, Italy. Many major cities in Europe, such as Amsterdam, Paris, Munich, etc. are easily accessible from Switzerland, and students can make their own travel plans after the conclusion of the program.

Faculty Leaders: This program will be led by Tim Flohr (tflohr1@memphis.edu) and Dr. Radesh Palakurthi (rplkrthi@memphis.edu) of the UofM Kemmons Wilson School of Hospitality and Resort Management.

Course Information:  Health and wellness businesses are now beyond three trillion-dollar industry globally, and one of the fastest growing markets. The health & wellness landscape is mounting as a result of consumer mid set towards being healthy in mind and body; and propagation of the employer designed health and wellness programs. The health and wellness segments are dominated by fitness, health & wellness spas, life enhancement, beauty and anti-aging products, healthy eating & nutrition, and corporate health and wellness programs. As a result, this field offers tremendous opportunities for:

  • Hospitality entrepreneurship and small business development
  • Hospitality operations and management
  • Foodservice innovation and development
  • Management across cultures
  • Sales and marketing, consulting

The courses offered in this program cover such topics by focusing on entrepreneurship and hospitality operations in the wellness and commercial food service industry in Europe and engaging in experiential learning and excursions. 

Course Credits: Students will have the option to take HPRM 4350/6350 and/or HPRM 3650. These courses will be offered as "Credit by Exam", which will show as "S" - Satisfactory (Pass) or "U" - Unsatisfactory (Fail) on participants transcripts after they have completed the program. Per the approval of participants' academic advisor, the credits will count but will not affect student's GPA.
