Program Description: Through lectures and field trips with businesses in the Tuscany area, participants will extensively interact with a diverse set of business professionals and learn what it takes to be successful in leadership in today’s interconnected world. Cultural intelligence will be explored for leadership effectiveness in international business settings.

Program Location: This course will be taught at the SIAF International School of Advanced Studies located in Volterra in the Tuscany region of Italy. Idyllically situated in the Tuscan countryside offering a panoramic view of the sea, just a short distance from the historical hilltop town of Volterra, SIAF provides a congenial environment for study courses. Only an hour from Pisa, Florence and Siena, Volterra is a historical hilltop town with about 10,000 inhabitants, founded by the Etruscans in the heart of Tuscany three thousand years ago, rises 550 metres above sea level and affords a spectacular panoramic view of the Cecina valley and the Era valley. A haven of Etruscan, Roman, Medieval and Renaissance art and architecture, Volterra is famous throughout the world for its age-old tradition of alabaster carving.

About SIAF: The SIAF International School for Advanced Education is the result of a partnership between Sant'Anna School of Advanced Studies in Pisa, the Foundation of Cassa di Risparmio di Volterra and the regional government of Tuscany. The aim of the School is to provide advanced executive education in the areas of management and technology. Course Information: MGMT 4810: The course will focus on leadership and cultural intelligence. This will include discussions with leaders on the challenges of developing innovative new programs and solutions, while reconciling local and global cultures. Visits to various organizations including banking, technology, and tourism type organizations will be featured to learn from practitioners in the field in regard to leading an international-based organization.

Through these experiences, class sessions, and projects, participants will come to more fully understand that leadership is not the same everywhere; that professionals must shift communication, interpersonal strategies, and leadership methods to adjust to the values and experiences of different cultural contexts and groups. By exploring ways in which specific leadership characteristics are valued differently in different cultures, students will gain hands-on experience in practicing leadership, followership, and teamwork behaviors in a culture not their own.

Credits: Students will be awarded credits for either MGMT 4810: International Management or MGMT/BA 4910: Independent Study in Management or International Business.

Faculty Leader: This program will be led by Dr. Kathy Tuberville, Director of the Avron B. Fogelman Professional Development Center. You can contact Dr. Tuberville at k.tuberville@memphis.edu or 901.678.4740.
