Program Description: Business and Hotel Management School of Switzerland (BHMS), located in the heart of Lucerne, is considered a top hospitality school and is part of one of Switzerland's oldest and largest private higher education institutions. Offering degree programs in culinary arts, hospitality management and global business, BHMS prepares leaders in the hospitality and service industry by coupling sound instruction in Swiss hospitality excellence with hands-on experience and valuable industry training. 
The BHMS Hospitality Management program is specifically designed for students wishing to enter the international hotel and hospitality field and who are aspiring to a management career in this industry. Study abroad options of varying lengths are available to UofM students. Students studying at BHMS for one full year will spend 6 months in the classroom followed by 4-6 months of industry training, where they gain real work experience through employment at one of hundreds of BHMS partner companies worldwide. Alternately, students may choose to only complete the study portion of a shortened semester of 3 months where they will earn up to 12 credits. 

Location: Continually ranked as a top international tourist destination, Lucerne is the most visited city in Switzerland. It is in the center of Switzerland on the shores of Lake Lucerne and at the scenic heart of the Swiss Alps with its famous Pilatus mountain. Lucerne is situated on the most important route between northern and southern Europe and is connected with the Swiss railway network in six directions. It is strategically located for easy access via air, road, and rail for travel to all major European destinations such as Milan, Frankfurt, Paris or Vienna.

Internships: Students studying at BHMS for one year will have the opportunity to complete a paid industry training and to gain experience in the various areas of the hospitality industry. Students participating in a 4-6 month internship receive a monthly salary of 2,172 Swiss Francs (approx. $2,200). Examples of placements include Hilton, Marriott, Hyatt, Sheraton, The Ritz-Carlton, Fairmont Hotels and Resorts, The Dolder Resort, and Kempinski Hotels and Resorts. Unfortunately, it is not possible to arrange for industry training for programs shorter than one academic year.

Company Visits: Students will have an opportunity to participate in an extensive range of industry visits on a regular basis. This includes Eichhof Brewery Luzern, Callier Chocolate Factory Gruyere, Cheese Factory Engelberg, Mt. Pilatus, and various 4- and 5- star hotels. 

Cultural & Recreational Excursions: Participants will have the option to participate in regular excursions within Lucerne and beyond such as evenings at the movies, Swiss mountain biking, boat trips, visits to amusements parks, as well as trips to Paris, Vienna, and Milan. 

Room and Board: Students will live on campus or in the city in BHMS approved apartments with the choice of an international roommate. Both options include en suite kitchenettes and bathrooms. No more than two students occupy a room at one time. Breakfast, lunch and dinner are available all days of the week at the BHMS campus restaurant.
