May 10 - May 19, 2018

Program Description: J.K. Rowling's Harry Potter book series is deeply grounded in rich philosophical and narrative traditions of England and Scotland. Over the course of the spring semester, students will examine each of the seven books in the series through a specific academic lens, exploring the literary, intellectual, historical, geographical, and cultural influences to Rowling's work. The course will culminate in May with a ten-day study trip to London, England and Edinburgh, Scotland to explore sources of influence. The trip will include King's Cross Station, Leavesden, Alnwyck Castle, the Ministry of Magic, Edinburgh Castle, Greyfriar's Kirkyard, the Heriot School, the Scottish Highlands, and the Hogwarts Express.

Course Information: Students will enroll in ENGL 3104: Rediscovering Harry Potter: Sources, Landscapes & Legacies for the Spring 2018 semester. Each weekly class meeting will feature student-led activities and discussions designed to evoke, promote, and inspire an understanding of the magic of the series as a whole. Class will meet once a week on Wednesday from 12:40pm-2:05pm during the spring semester. Students will have 20+ hours of direct instruction while in the UK.
