Program Description:
Political Science in London & Berlin

London-Berlin

May 10 - 21, 2018

Program Description: Through various site visits and guest lectures, this program will compare state formation and national identity in Great Britain and Germany.

Great Britain is the birthplace of the parliamentary system of government while still providing an example of a monarchial system that historically exercised power. As the epicenter of the Industrial Revolution modern capitalism evolved there in concert with increasing democratic rule. It was also the first country to place limitations on the powers of monarchs in the form of the Magna Carta, widely considered to be the primary foundation of the process that led to democracy and constitutional law as we know it today. Germany uses a hybrid voting system which provides an excellent opportunity to explore the advantages and disadvantages of single member districts and proportional representation. Germany’s history of separation after World War II and subsequent re-unification offer ample opportunities to explore communism versus democracy, capitalism versus socialism among other issues.
