Spanish Language and Chilean Culture

June 19-July 30


Program Description: Explore the Valparaíso region of Chile this summer and take advantage of beautiful weather, stunning beaches, and the magnificent mountains of Cordillera de Los Andes. This six-week Spanish Language and Chilean Culture program combines intensive language study with an overview of national literature and modern social and political Chilean issues. It includes two one-day excursions: to the Cabalgata Dunas de Ritoque as well as to the capital city of Santiago..
 
Course Information: Advanced students take two of the following four courses: Spanish Grammar, Spanish Conversation and Chilean Culture, Contemporary Chilean Literature, and Sociopolitical History of Chile--20th & 21st Centuries. Intermediate and beginning students take Spanish Grammar and Conversation, and Chilean Culture. Students receive a total of 120 contact hours for the program.

Language Proficiency:

Eligibility for Advanced Students: 4 – 5 semesters of college-level Spanish or the equivalent.
Eligibility for Intermediate Students: 3 – 4 semesters of college-level Spanish or the equivalent.
Eligibility for Beginning Students: 2 semesters of college-level Spanish or the equivalent.
Note: The University of Memphis ultimately determines proficiency level and course eligibility.

Application Instructions: Click "Apply Now" to create a Study Abroad Application. You must submit a Study Abroad Application by March 1 in order to be considered for this program. In addition, you will need to complete an application for ISEP by May 1. Instructions on how to apply to ISEP will be found with your Study Abroad Application materials.

Program Fees: $3,700 + $290 Study Abroad application fee + $60 ISEP application fee

Accommodations: Students live with Chilean host families. Meals are provided.

Student Activities: 2 Valparaiso city tours, 3 Handcraft workshops, 2 excursions (Santiago & Ritoque), Language exchange sessions with Chilean students, Airport pick up & drop off (on official arrival/departure dates)
