Fundação Armando Alvares Penteado (FAAP) Summer Program
Brazilian Language, History, and Culture
June 19-July 27
Program Description: Study Portuguese in vibrant São Paulo while learning Brazilian song
and dance, cooking, and jewelry-making. This five-week Brazilian
Language, History, and Culture program includes several cultural
activities, two literature classes, and a tour of Downtown São Paulo
where students experience authentic cuisine in the traditional Mercado
Municipal. Students live either with host families or on the Fundação
Armando Alvares Penteado (FAAP) campus, located in one of the most
traditional districts of São Paulo.
Course Information: Students attend courses on weekdays (4 hours per day / 100 hours
total). Courses include Portuguese language; History, Geography, and
Brazilian Culture; and Introduction to Brazilian and Portuguese
Literature.
Language Information: FAAP offers two course options depending on the student’s language knowledge:
Intensive Portuguese Course for Speakers of English:
Students whose native or second language is English (and have no
knowledge of Spanish) will be enrolled in this introductory language
course. Course description.
Intensive Portuguese Course for Speakers of Spanish:
This course is designed for students (a) who are fluent in Spanish,
either native or as a second language (intermediate or above), or (b)
who have taken four semesters of university-level Portuguese language
courses and be in the A2 level (according to the European Framework of
Reference). This course draws students’ attention to forms that differ
from Spanish: taking advantage of the similarities, stressing the
differences, and focusing on those features of Portuguese which are
most difficult for Spanish speakers. Course description.
Normally, students applying to either courses will be required to
schedule an online interview with the language coordinator at FAAP to
determine their language level. Once in Brazil, students will take a
placement test. Note: The University of Memphis ultimately determines proficiency level and course eligibility.
